It’s considered a behavioral disorder that affects both the victim and the people around them. It starts off when people use alcohol as a coping mechanism. It then changes the person’s behavior, isolating themselves from their loved ones. Then, after long term abuse comes the physical damages. Among them is neuropathy.

What is Alcoholic Neuropathy?

Simply put, it’s damage to the nerves of your arms and legs, due to too much alcohol use. The nerves commonly affected are the peripheral nerves. Their job is to transmit signals to the spine and back. When alcohol consumption damages these nerves, signals can get distorted or missent, causing numbness and tingling. The damage happens when alcohol affects the nutrients your nerves need. Vitamins such as vitamin B6, B12, folate, and thiamine are essential to nerve health. Lack of these can cause neuropathy. Fortunately, quitting alcohol can help prevent further damage, but sadly, nerve damage is almost always permanent.

Symptoms of Alcoholic Neuropathy

The first symptom is the tingling feeling in the limbs. Though tingling is also one of the symptoms of diabetes, it can be differentiated and confirmed with the following symptoms. Visit the nearest addiction treatment center in your area to learn more about alcoholism.

Effects on the peripherals (arms and legs)

Noticeable muscle weakness

Burning and tingling sensations

Noticeable loss of muscle coordination

Prickly sensations similar to “pins and needles”

Noticeable decrease in muscle mass

Effects on your excretory system:

Constipation

Incontinence

Occasional Diarrhea

Loss of urinary control

Getting the sensation that the bladder is not fully empty

Other symptoms can also include:

Impotence

Impaired or slurred speech

Temperature intolerance

Though the effects of neuropathy rarely fatal, it can impede your quality of life. There are therapies that can help ease the symptoms. Ultimately, prevention is better than cure.

How to Diagnose Alcohol Neuropathy

Even if you know the symptoms, there could still be other explanations like diabetes and other nerve diseases. The only way to confirm alcohol neuropathy is to consult your doctor. With that, they will perform a wide number of tests, some of which are:

Complete Neurological Examination

Complete Blood Count (CBC)

Electromyography

Nerve Conduction Tests

Liver, Kidney, and Thyroid tests

Upper GI and Small Bowel Tests

Part of the blood tests also includes a full vitamin workup. They will check if you're missing essential vitamins needed to maintain nerve health.

Alcoholic Neuropathy Treatment

If prevention was not enough and the neuropathy has started, it’s not all too late. Consult your doctor and they may provide the following treatments to manage the symptoms.

Physical therapy to combat muscle atrophy

Gears and equipment to manage peripheral stability

Medication for loss of urinary control

Pain relievers, anti depressants, and anticonvulsants

There's also rehabilitation treatments and detox to counter alcoholism. The treatment for it is two-pronged. They will attempt to manage or treat the symptoms while dealing with the source.

How to Prevent Alcoholic Neuropathy

Addiction has become common in the last years. Many fall into its trap, while the people surrounding them are affected. It can happen in many forms: gambling, drugs, alcohol, and other activities.

But what separates addiction from simply enjoying the pleasures of life?

Addiction is when the activity has interfered with the individual’s life. Addiction happens when the person relies on the substance or activity to function. Often, someone afflicted with addiction may not realize it at first. The signs appear gradually, almost unrecognizable. Before you know it, it has already gotten out of hand.

Is It a Disease or a Choice?

A disease is a disorder that affects the mind or body. It becomes chronic when it becomes uncontrollable or incurable. But, isn’t addiction controllable? A lot of people believe that addiction is a choice. It’s believed that addiction can simply be turned off as easily as it was started. While the start of drug use is a choice, that choice can be removed by addiction itself. Addiction affects the brain functions. Long-term use of drugs and alcohol can affect learning, memory, and behavior. At this point, it becomes uncontrollable. It becomes a disease. Visit a reliable drug addiction treatment in your area for more information. Many medical professional and organizations have declared substance addiction as a disease. As DrugAbuse.gov defines, addiction is a brain disease. It forces the individual to use the substance or activities despite their consequences. It is a chronic disease that, if left untreated, can become dangerous. Still, there are those who blame the individual for their addiction. Yes, the first intake of drug and alcohol is the person’s choice, but the addiction is developed within their brain. This is the same as developing diabetes and heart disease by the person’s diet and lifestyle. People who suffer addiction are not to at fault. The substance that they are using affects their body and mind directly, which causes the addiction. The brain becomes dependent on the substance. It believes that it cannot function properly without it, while the opposite is actually the truth. With the brain affected, it is difficult for the individual to resist.

What can be one about it?

Like many other diseases, addiction is treatable, but it may be incurable. With various research conducted by professionals, there are now methods to control addiction. There are already innumerable success stories of patients overcoming their addiction. Research suggests that addiction treatments are best combined with therapy. The treatments can rid the body and brain from the effects of the substance. The therapy ensures that the patient will not go astray. These treatments and their long-term effects will depend on the individual. So, determining the cause of their addiction and giving awareness will be most beneficial to the patient. Addiction is also preventable. Organizations created programs to give awareness about addiction and how to prevent it. With the knowledge of their harmful effects, people can choose not to try drugs and alcohol. Addiction is a disease. It affects the person's mind and body. It can be dangerous. But it is treatable and preventable. Determination and the support of the patient's loved ones are the keys to their improvement. Check out this playlist to learn more about addiction. [button link="tel:863-623-4923" type="big" color="green" newwindow="yes"] Call Now![/button]

So are the expenses behind it. Typical rehabilitation costs can range from $10,000 up to $50,000. $50,000 is just about the average annual household income. This makes actual, and potential addicts look away, risking their life and livelihood. Where will they go to if they can’t afford the healthcare they need? In accordance with the Affordable Care Act, Optum Healthcare Insurance now covers rehab and detoxification. Optum is a part of the UnitedHealth Group, who caters to more than 80 million citizens across the nation. Have a visit to the nearest treatment center in your area for more information.

What Program Will I Be In?

There are two kinds of rehab treatments: Inpatient and Outpatient programs. Both involve the twelve-step program, medications, counseling and group meetings. Your program will depend on the conditions of your addiction.

If your condition meets the criteria, you'll opt for outpatient care:

You don’t have any other physical and mental conditions.

Withdrawal won’t have any complications other than what’s intended

Other substances or medication you take won’t affect the treatment

There’s low risk of exposing you to the abused substance

There are no inpatient facilities in your area

Otherwise, you'll opt for inpatient care. In inpatient care, you'll be admitted to a hospital for a week or so. Some inpatient care is residential, meaning you'll live in a facility for a month or more. Some facilities offer luxury suites for rehab. This program offers extra amenities like swimming pools, sports facilities, gym equipment, and food prepared by chefs. Optum may not cover the luxury suite but they will cover the medical aspects.

What Programs Do They Cover?

Optum has coverage on nearly all rehabilitation programs, even alternative medicinal therapy. The following are examples of Optum’s coverage:

Outpatient and Inpatient Rehabilitation

Detoxification Treatments

12-Step Programs and other structured rehab programs

Dual Diagnosis for addictions with underlying physical or mental conditions

Alternative and Holistic Treatments

Withdrawal Medication

Methadone Treatments

Partial Hospitalization Programs

Some of these treatments need pre-approval from Optum before they cover it. Once you have your doctor’s recommendation, always confirm with Optum if they will cover the treatment. If they don’t they can always work with your physician to get you a “win-win” program.

How Long am I Covered For?

Rehab lasts from a couple of weeks to half a year. If approved, Optum will cover for the program's entire length. If your physician or addict specialist recommends an extension Optum has to approve it first before they cover it. In some inpatient programs, your physicians recommend a supplementing outpatient program. This is to ensure the smooth transition back to the world, along with monitoring and evaluation.

What if I Don’t Have Insurance But I Need Help Now!

It's not too late. Contact Optum and see if you can find a compromise for pre-existing conditions. The amount they will cover may not be as much, but any discounts will help. There are also free government programs and nonprofit organizations that will help you cope, and eventually, cure your addiction. Quality healthcare must be affordable, as healthy, hardworking people are the bread and butter of any good nation. It’s also our responsibility to take care of ourselves. Even if rehabilitation is within reach, it’s still better to be safe than sorry. Check out this playlist from Detox of South Florida Miami to learn more about rehabilitation. https://detoxofsouthflorida.com for the best addiction treatment center [button link="tel:863-623-4923" type="big" color="green" newwindow="yes"] Call Now![/button]

The word itself means to restore someone's life from imprisonment, illness and most importantly, addiction. The actual process is relatively hard, especially for the first two weeks. What's even harder is the expense. In average, rehab will cost about $2,000 and that's for mild cases. Rehabilitation for severe cases can cost $12,000 up to a blistering $60,000. As of 2016, $60,000 is the average yearly American household income. This means rehab can take a big bite out of your pocket, so what now? Thankfully, AmeriHealth has the solution. Due to the Affordable Care Act, healthcare insurance companies offer coverage for treatments. The coverage will depend on their plans, as some of the plans only cover detoxification treatment.

Great! How do I start?

Before anything else, speak to your doctor. Even better if you speak with an AmeriHealth accredited specialist. Once you get a specialist’s recommendations, you can then speak to AmeriHealth’s member support to determine the coverage. Depending on your treatment, they will find the best facilities to serve your medical needs. Visit the best addiction treatment center in your area for more information.

What Kind of Treatments Are There?

Rehabilitation is not a one-size-fits-all program. Different people have different factors, thus having different treatments. These treatments have two types: Inpatient and Outpatient treatment. Outpatient care is more suited for patients with mild cases. It commonly involves a patient going to an office or hospital for treatment, for a few hours in a day. The treatment involves either medical therapy or counseling, sometimes both. Outpatient care allows patients to go home at the end of the day. Inpatient programs are for cases that require more control. Patients go to a rehab center and stay there for a certain amount of time. It also involves medication and counseling, often lasting months. Some rehab facilities offer luxury suites. These facilities have extra amenities like gourmet food and top of the line gym equipment. AmeriHealth may not cover the costs of luxury facilities, so check with their support.

General Coverage

AmeriHealth plans in general, cover the following treatments for both substance dependency and abuse programs. Detoxification: 100% covered. You need pre-authorization from Amerihealth beforehand. Inpatient Rehabilitation: 100% covered. You need pre-authorization from Amerihealth beforehand. Outpatient Rehabilitation: and Treatment: Clinical visits are partially covered, with a $5 copay.

The following are what they don’t cover:

For all services they cover, AmeriHealth will cover the entire duration. For treatments extending their assigned duration, you’ll need pre-authorization. Healthcare is everyone’s right. With the recent advancement of medicine, more effective treatments are made. This means likely means health care will be more expensive, not just to cover the costs of materials, but for research as well. Some people think they don’t need health insurance, that saving money is better. The verdict isn’t clear, but it’s up to you. Click on the playlist below for more alcohol and drug addiction information. https://detoxofsouthflorida.com for the best addiction treatment center [button link="tel:863-623-4923" type="big" color="red" newwindow="yes"] Call Now![/button]

What makes it worse is that rehab and detox services are expensive. Financing rehabilitation was difficult before, until the Affordable Healthcare Act. Now, insurance companies are now adding rehab services as part of their coverage. United Behavioral Health (UHB) is among the largest healthcare insurance companies in the US. Depending on your plan, UHB can fully or partially cover your rehab, under certain conditions. The first condition must be that the program is pre-approved. Second, the program must have a proper outline, with clear goals and all personnel accounted for. Third, the program must have constant monitoring by professionals. Visit the nearest addiction treatment center to get started.

How do I start?

If you’re already a member, you need to check with UHB accredited physicians. After the physicians make a diagnosis, you can then be referred to an Addiction Specialist. Since rehab affects each person differently, your addiction specialist will decide which program will fit you best.

Inpatient vs Outpatient

There are several factors that determine whether you'll be opted into inpatient or outpatient care. For outpatient care to be considered, you need to meet the following criteria:

Your daily activities don’t undermine your treatment.

You don’t have physical or mental conditions that can cause complications.

You have a low risk of using a new substance.

There are no inpatient facilities close to your area.

Inpatient care is considered for more severe cases. Inpatient treatments are generally more expensive. As the name goes, you're required to be admitted to a hospital, or in residential treatments, have you live inside a rehab facility.

Inpatient treatments are considered if any of the conditions are met:

You have physical and mental complications due to the addiction.

You have a condition that could be undermined by regular treatment.

Your household has high risks of exposing you to drugs and alcohol.

There are no outpatient facilities in your area.

Coverage Details

After the preliminary conditions are met, UHB will then consider coverage if the program for rehab is an “Active Treatment.” A treatment can be considered active if it has the following:

Treatment has a definite and substantial diagnosis

The program’s short and long term goals are outlined

Your physician has enough evidence to justify rehabilitation as the treatment

UHB will only cover a maximum of 190 days per person, per lifetime. This means all your total inpatient days must not exceed 190. Once it reaches that amount, you need to speak to UHB’s addiction support to negotiate continued coverage. For outpatient treatment, UHB has other criteria to be considered. First is that the program must be recommended by a practitioner of similar line. This means an outpatient treatment for behavioral disorder and alcoholism, must be recommended by a psychiatrist or an addiction specialist. Second, the treatment's outline must have a significant effect on the patient. The program's outline should show clear expectations and goals, ones that apply to you. Third, the outpatient program must be supervised by an appropriate physician. Counselors must have proper credentials for UHB to consider coverage. Check out this playlist from addiction center Miami for more information. https://detoxofsouthflorida.com for the best addiction treatment center [button link="tel:863-623-4923" type="big" color="green" newwindow="yes"] Call Now![/button]

It's ill effects on your life, livelihood and other people are similar to drug abuse. It is, however, not as profound as say, addiction to heroin, but that very fact makes it hard to diagnose. An alcoholic wouldn’t normally go to a doctor. One of the first reactions of alcoholics is denial. How do you know if someone is an alcoholic? Do you have a loved one you’re deeply concerned about? Are you concerned about your own alcohol intake? Being concerned is a very good step. It means you know something’s wrong. Most people in denial will attempt to justify their activities and pass them off as “regular.” Alcoholism is a problem best treated as early as possible.

Defining Alcoholism and an Alcoholic

Simply put, Alcoholism is a dependency to alcohol. The ill effects come when an alcoholic does everything they can, including violence, to get their dose. It is, therefore, an illness. Alcoholism is a long-term disease, one that can take an equally long time to recover from. An alcoholic is someone who suffers from alcohol use disorder. The term is used more correctly, as the person who suffers is a victim. He or she may be the one pouring the drinks, but that doesn't mean he or she has control. Alcoholics tend to have no control over their urges. Alcohol has as much a grip on them as their grip on the bottle.

What Causes Alcoholism?

Alcohol dependence happens over a long period of time. It could take years before the dependency sinks in. Sadly, some people are more affected by it than others. In some cases, the dependency is deceptively hidden, only revealed when it's too late. Understanding the causes can help you determine the possible hidden symptoms.

The following are some factors that aid to alcoholism:

Starting Age: Let’s face it, young teenagers drink. This is due to the alcohol’s role as a stress reliever and experience enhancer. When the mind gets used to this, it gets hard-grained upon adulthood.

Ease of Access: Access to cheap alcohol and weak law enforcement encourages alcoholism. The easier it is to get alcohol, the more likely it’s used.

Stress and Depression: Common in present times. Inebriation acts as a gateway from stress and depression, leaving them for another time.

Media Advertising: Though not really a direct cause, alcohol is often presented in glamorous, refined and enjoyable ways. This can bring about the wrong impressions to potential alcoholics.

Symptoms of Alcoholism

If you encounter some of the following symptoms, with an understanding of how it starts, you may be able to determine if someone is an alcoholic.

Though the symptoms are in general, they are constant.

Increased amount of alcohol consumption due to tolerance

Withdrawal Symptoms when not consuming alcohol

Increased rate and severity of hangovers

Reduced interests on things they usually do

Reduced attention to responsibilities

Irritability/Rage when their “ritual” is not followed

Having “stashes” of alcohol in unusual places

With the full understanding of the causes and symptoms, you should be able to determine if you or someone has an alcohol use disorder. Check out this playlist for more information. https://detoxofsouthflorida.com for the best addiction treatment center [button link="tel:863-623-4923" type="big" color="green" newwindow="yes"] Call Now![/button]

You often don't see it as a problem until it starts hurting others, so why wait? Some people will answer with, "I can't afford it," and find their own way to treating themselves. This doesn't always work out. Going cold turkey has bad repercussions and not a lot of people went through it without a hitch. TUFTS Health Plans provides coverage for detoxification and rehabilitation. In accordance with the Affordable Healthcare Act, even the average citizen can avail usually expensive services. Visit your trusted addiction treatment center to learn more about drug rehabilitation.

Rehabilitation Coverage

The specifics will vary, but in general, TUFTS will cover treatment and rehab for the following drug addictions:

Alcohol

Cocaine

Marijuana

Crystal Meth

Heroin

Prescription Drug Abuse

When is Too Much, Too Much?

Often, patients with addiction only get help when someone makes them. This could be their loved ones, or in some cases, law enforcement. On the other side, what you believe could be an addiction, could easily be managed with simple healthy choices. So, how do you find out?

If you answer yes to more than one of these questions, talk to your physician.

Are you getting concerned about your alcohol intake?

Is your addiction undermining your work?

Is your addiction undermining your relationships?

Do any of your friends and family show concern about your usage?

Are you taking alcohol or drugs while pregnant?

When you need to speak to your doctor, a good tip is to contact TUFTS and ask if they have any accredited physicians in your area. This often streamlines the process, as they can lead you to equally accredited facilities and professionals.

What Program Will Be Best For Me?

It’s up to your physician to find out what program will be best for you. There are outpatient treatments and inpatient treatments depending on your case. Your doctor may opt for an outpatient treatment if the following conditions are met:

Your addiction doesn’t cause immediate harm to you or others.

Your daily activities don’t get in the way of treatment.

You don’t have any existing conditions that could affect the program.

Your life situation has a low risk of exposing you to your abused substance.

Outpatient care consists of counseling and medication where you visit an office for a few hours. The frequency of visits can vary from 3 days a week, to daily visits. This is suitable if you want to stay close to your loved ones, or if you have unavoidable business responsibilities.

Inpatient care is considered if any of the following conditions are met:

Outpatient programs don't work or have little effect.

You have health conditions that need to be addressed.

You have mental issues that need attention.

Your life situation makes it difficult to stay away from drugs or alcohol.

You have no outpatient clinics in your area.

The duration of inpatient stays depend on your recovery. There’s a standard stay-in period but can be extended if you show slow progress. Normally, inpatient treatment is residential, so you have to live inside the facility. By checking out the playlist below, you will learn more about addiction and rehabilitation. https://detoxofsouthflorida.com for the best addiction treatment center [button link="tel:863-623-4923" type="big" color="green" newwindow="yes"] Call Now![/button]

Good reasons can be: that you’re sworn sober, the designated driver, or you had too much last night.

Want to enjoy a night out and feel part of a celebration but can't consume alcohol?

Introducing the Non-Alcoholic Cocktails, also known as “Mocktails” or “Virgin Drinks.”

What’s a Non-Alcoholic Drink?

One would say a Non-Alcoholic drink is just glorified juice. Technically speaking, they are correct, but there's more to it. We have a plethora of cocktail recipes, all with interesting, refreshing tastes. Some would like the minty, limey bite of a Mojito. Others prefer the more forgiving flavors of a Cosmopolitan. There are also people who challenge themselves with strong drinks like the Zombie. It's fruity yet heavy mix is bound to turn you into one around your third glass. The point is that everyone drinks to get a certain experience. Some would like this experience without the hassles of getting drunk. Non-Alcoholic Cocktails are cocktails that are meant to mimic the flavor, the heat, and bite of cocktails, without the consequences. People strive to mix and match ingredients to mimic the flavors of liquor. They would use vinegar, salt, pepper and all manner of juices to create a mocktail that's sometimes better than the original.

Why is it Popular?

There will be times when drinkers must stop. You may have your ritual nightly cup of homemade margarita, but what if you're pregnant? What if you were a recovering alcoholic and couldn't avoid going a fancy restaurant with your co-workers? The temptation is strong, but thanks to the invention of the mocktail, you get to enjoy with everyone or continue your nightly ritual. There are also places with laws against drinking alcohol. Various occasions that fall within these places often need that touch of liquor. Virgin drinks fit that occasional need perfectly.

Non-Alcoholic Beer

There's also Non-Alcoholic Beer, colloquially known as "Near-Beer." These are beer that either has zero percent alcohol or have dramatically less. They nearly taste like beer, thus the name and has certain health benefits. Those who regularly drink beer could suffer from dehydration, anxiety and sleeping problems. The bigger problem is that for some people it's hard to stop. With Near-Beer, all those problems go away. It rehydrates you better without the alcohol. Furthermore, the hops from the brewed malt have a slight sedative effect. There are some studies that suggest that near-beer is good for breastfeeding. The malt compounds in the drink apparently improve the amount of milk produced. The exact process though is still up for research but experiments show the numbers. Will you still get a beer-belly if you drink near-beer? Yes, sadly. Most near-beer have nearly as high calories. Alcohol is only responsible for a small percentage of the calories. Remove that and you still have the rest of the beer to deal with. Like it or not, it’s there to stay. It’s good news for a lot of people. It’s also a fun experience to try and compare the cocktail to its mocktail counterpart. See if you can taste the difference. Click on the playlist below to learn more information. https://detoxofsouthflorida.com for the best addiction treatment center [button link="tel:863-623-4923" type="big" color="green" newwindow="yes"] Call Now![/button]

It's believed that a person can stop using the substance that they are abusing whenever they want. The truth is that addiction is a disease. And like other diseases, it needs treatment. If not, it would lead to permanent damages to the person’s health, lifestyle, and relationships. Addiction not only affects the person using drugs or alcohol. It also affects the people close to them. People with addiction need both support from their loved ones and medical treatment. Many choose to experiment to battle addiction by themselves, avoiding high medical bills. While our health is something we should invest on, many would take their chances to avoid spending a lot. For those who want to seek help, Harvard Pilgrim can make bills more affordable. Harvard Pilgrim is one of the most trusted healthcare insurance providers in the US. In their Behavioral Health Program, they assist members undergoing abuse rehabilitation programs. Harvard Pilgrim provides services in Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Hampshire.

What programs do they cover?

Harvard Pilgrim's coverage can extend between 28 to 90 days. This will depend on the healthcare specialist recommendation. The healthcare specialist can request for an extension of coverage as well. The following are what Harvard Pilgrim can cover during a member's rehabilitation.

Behavioral Health Programs

Mental Health Programs

Detoxification

Partial Hospitalization Treatment

Intensive Outpatient Programs

After-Care Programs

Qualified members can also sign up for luxury or private rehabilitation facilities. These facilities offer amenities like those of a hotel or resort. Patients can enjoy massages, luxurious dining, and other exclusive services. This is so that patients will feel comfortable during their rehabilitation. Luxury or private rehabilitation facilities usually cater to celebrities and wealthy patients.

Difference Between Inpatient and Outpatient

Patients have the option of taking their treatment through inpatient or outpatient care. Inpatient care requires the patient to stay in the facility. Outpatient care allows the patient to visit for their treatment whenever convenient. Many chose to sign up for outpatient care due to convenience. But inpatient care is more advisable for patients with certain conditions. Patients under outpatient care can consult with medical professionals. They can also attend group therapy sessions. For every consultation and session, it may need co-payments. Harvard Pilgrim can cover between $4,000 to $10,000 for outpatient treatments. This may still depend on the number of visits the patient will make. Inpatient programs may last up to 28 days or more. The facilities that provide inpatient care will manage their treatments. This can cost between $6,000 to $20,000 for a 28-day program. If the healthcare provider deems that the patient needs a longer treatment, it may cost more. Consult with a rehabilitation specialist to know what treatment option suits your needs. Your recommendation will be helpful when choosing your health care plan. You may contact a Harvard Pilgrim representative to get more information. Medical bills may give us second thoughts about seeking help and treatments. But when it comes to our well-being, these are things that we should invest on. With Harvard Pilgrim's insurance coverage, people with addiction may have hope. Check out the playlist below for more information. https://detoxofsouthflorida.com for the best addiction treatment center [button link="tel:863-623-4923" type="big" color="green" newwindow="yes"] Call Now![/button]

Their program is the Medication Assisted Treatment Close to Home or MATCH. MATCH assists the rehabilitation for patients of all ages. Studies have made a link between behavioral issues and addiction. Drugs and alcohol are often used as a gateway mechanism. Sometimes, people also use them to function. When people become dependent on the substance, it becomes addiction. Addiction is a slippery slope once it starts. If you're not a member of Hartford Healthcare’s insurance, it’s not too late. Even if you already have an existing addiction, Hartford encourages you to seek them for help. Hartford’s representatives will find a suitable compromise.

How do you start?

First is to consult your physician. They will give you a full work-up, which Hartford will covered. Your physician will then provide their diagnosis. After the diagnosis, you can contact Hartford's addiction specialists to start your program. For inpatient cases, consult with Hartford about the centers closest to you. They need to confirm if the center is Hartford accredited.

It helps patients go through the harder parts of the treatment. Withdrawal can cause anxiety that can affect a patient’s behavior. Counselor can work on this.

Group therapy is a kind of counseling that exposes a patient to a more social environment. Alcoholics Anonymous is one of these groups.

Private Therapy are personal meetings with a counselor. This applies to outpatient and inpatient treatments.

Inpatient vs Outpatient

Outpatient care is generally more affordable than inpatient treatments. They offer help for the patient while allowing the patient to live their normal lives. Outpatient care is advisable for patients whose addiction doesn't cause potential harm. Another factor to consider is the other substances that the patients take. It should not affect the treatment. Inpatient care is more suited for cases where the patient requires constant monitoring. Patients need to stay in rehab centers for a couple of weeks, sometimes months. Hartford’s plan can cover luxury rehab centers that provide more amenities. These amenities include swimming pools, gym equipment and gourmet food. Often, doctors recommend a supplementary outpatient program after a successful inpatient treatment. Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, insurance companies had made healthcare affordable. Costs are now less of an excuse to keep us from being healthy citizens. If your alcohol intake concerns you, speak to your health insurance provider. Same goes if you know someone close to you who is also struggling. It’s never too late to find help and it's closer to you than ever. Check out this playlist to learn more. https://detoxofsouthflorida.com for the best addiction treatment center [button link="tel:863-623-4923" type="big" color="green" newwindow="yes"] Call Now![/button]

Experts have developed treatments to battle against addiction. And yet, many who suffer from addiction choose not to get treated. One of the many factors for this decision is the potential medical bills. Some would choose not to deal with their addiction at all. Others may experiment on handling their condition alone. But the results may not be as effective as treating it with the support of a medical professional.

Cigna Coverage

Cigna Insurance offers a way to make these treatments more affordable. Cigna extends their insurance coverage for rehabilitation programs targeting addiction and substance abuse. Cigna's Behavioral Health division caters to members who need rehabilitation treatments.

All plans can cover inpatient and outpatient services. The patient can choose which option they want. They can choose outpatient treatments to continue with their daily lives during rehabilitation.

Is rehabilitation more expensive than continuing the addiction? Short-term answer, yes. Rehabilitation can cost around $10,000 and can go as high as $50,000, but there’s something else to consider: your health. Health is Wealth, and the long-term answer is no. The amount someone spends on their addiction will chip their pockets and their health. By the time they've spent as much as rehab costs, it might already be too late. If rehab is so expensive, how can people get the help they need? Following the Affordable Care Act, Carefirst's plans cover alcohol and drug rehabilitation. There are several factors you have to consider, some of them hidden from view. One person could be calmly sipping a mojito on a bar corner. Another could be downing his or her third can of beer. Are they both alcoholics? Yes and no. Better put, they could be, but it’s hard to tell. It’s less about what they drink as to how they drink it. Alcoholism influences a person’s entire life, so alcoholics are identified by how their lives are affected, as well as the lives of the people around them.

The Core of Alcoholism

In the very core of this behavioral disorder is the dependency. Dependency on any substance can cause a plethora of negative effects. In general, people with substance dependencies suffer the following symptoms:

Tolerance: Your body builds resistances over time. This means you have to consume more to get the same effect. More of the abused substance already spells disaster, further harming your body.

Withdrawal: You experience sweating, nausea, shaking and headaches when you stop. Withdrawal only happens when you’re depended on a substance. It’s your body’s way of getting rid of the toxins you’ve built up.

Lack of Control: Brought on by tolerance and the fear of withdrawal. You’ll find it difficult to control how much you’re consuming. Your urges are also much stronger, making consumption more frequent.

What are the Telltale Signs of an Alcoholic?

Spotting the symptoms is a tricky process. Often, alcoholics will be in denial. In some cases, they would weave the perfect justification for their actions. Confronting an alcoholic is about as hard, as they can become irritable and angry. Bad as it may be, let’s not forget that they also victims. Alcoholics are under the alcohol’s vice-grip and often, they can’t escape on their own.

Signs that someone is an alcoholic:

They appear drunk more often. Earlier than usual.

They get hangovers more often.

They appear irritable, tired and sickly.

They become secretive and dishonest.

They lose interest in things they enjoy.

They have a “stash” of alcohol.

They can’t resist alcohol when offered.

They prefer alcohol over the things they normally enjoy

They keep drinking despite knowing the full consequences

These symptoms share the core symptoms of addiction. They are difficult to point out and are often mistaken for something else. A man who always has a flask of rum doesn’t mean he’s alcoholic. On the other hand, if that man gets angry at you when you stop him, it might be a problem. When you have a loved one that’s going down a similar path, be honest with them. For alcoholics, they often don’t realize it’s a problem until someone else points it out. If they trust you enough, they will listen. If they don’t, talk to other people close to them. Alcoholism is a slippery slope and it’s long term effects require equally long term solutions. Stop them early and stop them. The earlier the better. Check out this playlist for more information on alcohol addiction. https://detoxofsouthflorida.com for the best addiction center [button link="tel:863-623-4923" type="big" color="blue" newwindow="yes"] Call Now![/button]

A sweat breaks out, then dizziness and nausea take over and then there is such a pain in the chest that the sufferer thinks they are having a major heart attack and death is imminent. When the panic attack is over, there is such a dread of it happening again that they worry about it all the time and even change their normal routine in an effort to avoid whatever triggered it in the first place. If left untreated, this cycle of anxiety-panic attack-anxiety-avoidance behavior develops into a panic disorder which can seriously affect quality of life. Millions of people worldwide suffer from panic attacks and because of the economic recession, this number is increasing all the time. However, no-one knows exactly why they occur. While there are common denominators in many cases, the slippery slope which led to the condition is unique to the person suffering from it. This is why there is no panacea and individual therapy is the only way to rid oneself on panic attacks, especially if they have developed into a panic disorder. That said, there are some tips to stop panic attacks which may be sufficient in the early stages to nip a disorder in the bud. The earlier action is taken and lifestyle changes are made, the more likely panic attacks can be stopped.

Work Stress and Anxiety

Panic attacks are the body's way of saying that it can't cope. The great majority of panic attacks are preceded by stress overloads often bought about by the modern lifestyle that leaves us short of quality time for ourselves. Lack of leisure time and exercise as well as work pressure are major stressors that take their toll on us mentally and physically. While it may be difficult to change your job, look for ways to delegate some of your responsibilities. Studies have shown that there are certain personality types which are prone to anxiety disorders and they are the perfectionists who aim high but are very critical of themselves. These type of people find it hard to delegate work to others even when it is not necessary that they do it themselves. Exercise has also been shown to help in the prevention of panic attacks. Feel good chemicals called pheromones are released during physical exercise which calm the mind and engender happier thoughts and less stress.

Diet and Panic Attacks

Too many people are falling into the habit of consuming fast pre-packaged food filled with additives and salt and lacking in nutrients and vitamins. The tendency nowadays is to rely on these kinds of food instead of home-cooked meals using fresh ingredients. Particularly important for the nervous system is vitamin B which is water soluble and so not stored in the body. This means that foods rich in vitamin B like fresh leafy green vegetables, whole grains, fish and animal products need to be consumed every day. Modern diets tend to be more acidic and less alkaline whereas an 80% alkaline 20% acidic diet is considered optimum for good health. Acid producing foods include refined sugar, processed food, meat and dairy while fruit and vegetables are alkaline. Visit the best treatment center in your area for more information. https://detoxofsouthflorida.com addiction treatment center in Miami Florida

Substance Abuse and Brain Anxiety

Alcohol, drugs, caffeine and smoking are all factors implicated in the development of panic attacks. Research has found that while one person may be able to tolerate these substances, another may have a sensitivity to them and so are more likely to suffer adverse consequences like panic attacks. Of course, long term abuse will result in many other health costs. Cutting them out will go a long way to boosting physical and mental health and decreasing vulnerability to anxiety.

Overcoming Panic Disorder with Breathing

Sometimes, rapid shallow breathing or over breathing can cause a panic attack and other times it may be the result of a panic attack but whatever the case, breathing exercises are crucial to circumventing a full blown attack. Breathing slowly from the abdominals rather than the chest and breathing out longer through pursed lips than breathing in through the nose is the best technique for dealing with shortness of breath.

Anxiety Attack Help

Help yourself to overcome panic and anxiety through common sense changes in lifestyle, diet and work habits. These are changes which benefit the body and mind in many other ways as well so when the panic attacks do subside, a brand new life awaits. Learn more about treatment options by checking out this playlist. https://detoxofsouthflorida.com best treatment center in Florida [button link="tel:863-623-4923" type="big" color="green" newwindow="yes"] Call Now![/button]

In severe cases of SAD, symptoms include thoughts of suicide, social withdrawal, trouble concentrating at school or at work, and alcohol or substance abuse. When severe symptoms of SAD occur, the person should seek medical attention immediately for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. Depending upon the degree of the symptoms, there are a variety of treatments that can alleviate SAD and help the person feel better throughout the season.

Light Therapy for SAD

In winter, days are shorter and light is limited causing a disruption in sleep levels, hormone levels and brain chemical levels. The brain chemical serotonin along with the hormone melatonin becomes low due to less sun exposure. For this reason, doctors prescribe light therapy for patients diagnosed with SAD. Light therapy consists of purchasing a light therapy box and having the patient sit next to it for a prescribed amount of time each day. The exposure to light helps elevate and regulate serotonin and melatonin in the body so the patient no longer feels depressed. Additional ways a person can do natural light therapy is to:

Sit beside windows more often during the day.

Spend time outside each day. This can help even on a cloudy day.

Add extra lighting in their home, larger windows, or skylights in the ceiling.

Herbal or Nutritional Supplements for SAD

Herbal remedies have been used for centuries to treat depression, anxiety and mood swings, all symptoms of SAD. Adding the proper nutritional supplements may also help alleviate mild to moderate symptoms of SAD. These include:

Ginseng – This herb has been used for over 2,000 years to treat many ailments but is widely used to soothe depression, decrease mood swings and boost mental performance. Ginseng comes in capsule form and as a tea. This herb can disrupt the performance of some prescription medications so check with a doctor before taking ginseng.

St. John’s wort – This herbal medication has long been used to treat mild to moderate depression and anxiety. St. John’s wort comes in capsule form. Speak to a doctor before taking this herb as it can negatively affect some prescription medications.

Melatonin – This is a hormone secreted by the pineal gland at the base of the brain. Melatonin helps to regulate sleep patterns, and too little in the system causes serotonin levels to drop which results in depression. Melatonin comes in capsule or tablet form and should be taken only under a doctor’s supervision.

Magnesium – A study published at the National Center for Biotechnology Information website states that adding magnesium to the diet can greatly help people suffering from mild to severe depression. Most people do not get enough magnesium in their diet, so for those suffering from SAD, taking a magnesium supplement may alleviate their depression.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids – Eating a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids has shown to relieve symptoms of depression. Adding more cold-water fish, nuts, flaxseed, canola oil or soybeans to the diet will increase intake of omega-3 fatty acids. Supplement capsules are also available.

Medications for SAD

People suffering from moderate to severe symptoms of SAD may find treatment with antidepressant medications beneficial. A doctor may prescribe the medication to begin in the fall and stop in the summer unless it is necessary throughout the year. Antidepressants that may be prescribed are Wellbutrin XL, Paxil, Prozac, Zoloft, Sarafem or Effexor. It is important to understand that it can take several weeks for the medication to alleviate depression and changes in antidepressants may be necessary until the appropriate one is found. The doctor may prescribe an antidepressant along with other therapies, such as light therapy and a change in diet, to help the patient deal with SAD. Go to the nearest treatment center in your area for more information. https://detoxofsouthflorida.com is the best addiction treatment center in Florida

Other Ways to Treat SAD

Adding exercise to the daily schedule is a good way to reduce stress and anxiety and ward off the symptoms of SAD. Exercise increases the “feel good” endorphins in the brain and helps to keep the mind and body balanced. Yoga, walking, strength training or any outdoor winter activity such as snowshoeing or skiing are all good ways to add exercise. Managing stress is another important way to treat SAD. Learning ways to calm stress at work, such as taking deep breaths or taking a quick walk around the office, can help lower anxiety. Meditation and massage therapy are also good ways to relieve stress. The symptoms of SAD should be taken seriously and treatment should be sought if a person feels depressed for more than just a few days. By finding the right treatment, people who are affected by SAD can enjoy their lives every season of the year. Check out more information from this playlist. https://detoxofsouthflorida.com addiction treatment center [button link="tel:863-623-4923" type="big" color="green" newwindow="yes"] Call Now![/button]

The older term for BDD is dysmorphophobia, which is sometimes still used. It is also referred to as “imagined ugliness syndrome”, however, this term is considered trivializing to people with BDD. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Disorders is the tool used to diagnose mental disorder in the US. The DSM-IV-TR (fourth edition, text revision) is the most current version and contains criteria for BDD. However, BDD is also usually included on the obsessive-compulsive spectrum, a hypothesized family of disorders that share features with OCD.

Symptoms of Body Dysmorphic Disorder

People with BDD are preoccupied with either a completely imagined defect, or a slight anomaly in appearance. Where there is a slight defect present, the person with BDD will have excessive concerns about it. Any body part can be of concern to someone with BDD, and in many cases the person with BDD will perceive several defects. Common perceived defects are usually facial, such as concerns about the texture of one’s skin or the shape of one’s nose. Many people with BDD perform rituals surrounding the perceived defect. Examples include:

Frequently looking in mirrors or reflective surfaces (or, conversely, avoiding mirrors altogether)

Excessive grooming, including hair styling, skin picking or applying makeup

Hiding the perceived defect, for example, using hats or makeup as camouflage

Asking others for reassurance regarding the perceived defect

Comparing themselves with other people

Seeking dermatological or surgical intervention for the perceived defect

People with BDD often struggle with relationships and are likely to experience difficulties in socializing, working and/or other life areas. In some cases, people with BDD feel unable to leave their homes. Visit the nearest treatment center in West Palm Beach for more information. https://detoxofsouthflorida.com addiction treatment center

Diagnosis and Body Dysmorphic Disorder

In order to make a diagnosis of BDD using the DSM-IV-TR, the following conditions must be satisfied:

The person has concerns about an appearance flaw, albeit slight or imagined

The person is preoccupied with the perceived flaw for at least an hour per day

The preoccupations result in significant distress or impairment of functioning

BDD is currently classified as a somatoform disorder. Where there is poorer insight, i.e. the person is convinced their perception is accurate, the case of BDD is classified as a delusional disorder. BDD is frequently comorbid with other disorders such as major depression. People with both BDD and major depression are at increased risk of suicide. BDD often goes undiagnosed. People with symptoms of BDD are often inhibited about coming forward due to feelings of shame and/or embarrassment. In particular, they may be worried about being labelled vain and/or narcissistic. It is more likely to be diagnosed when the physician asks specific questions relating to BDD.

Prevalence of Body Dysmorphic Disorder

Studies suggest that 1-2% of the US population has BDD, however, this figure cannot consider the cases that go undiagnosed. There is also little data available in other countries to estimate BDD’s prevalence on an international level. The available data suggests no gender differential in cases of BDD. For more information, check out this playlist from Detox of South Florida. https://detoxofsouthflorida.com treatment center in West Palm Beach [button link="tel:863-623-4923" type="big" color="green" newwindow="yes"] Call Now![/button]

Subsyndromal SAD is the label given to the mildest and most common form of winter SAD.

Symptoms of Winter SAD

Winter SAD can affect both adults and children, usually presenting with a young adult onset. People with winter SAD will experience some of the following symptoms (list adapted from the DSM-IV-TR):

Low mood (irritable mood in children or adolescents)

Notable loss of pleasure in most, if not all, activities

Notable changes in appetite and/or weight

Sleeping too much or too little

Slowing of psychological and physical activity

Fatigue, energy loss

Feelings of worthlessness, excessive guilt

Difficulty concentrating and/or making decisions

Recurrent thoughts of death, suicidal ideation

People with winter SAD are more likely to experience the atypical symptoms of depression, such as appetite increase, weight gain and sleeping too much, rather than decrease in appetite, weight loss and insomnia. Other atypical symptoms include irritability, rejection sensitivity and leaden feelings in the limbs (leaden paralysis).

Winter SAD and Diagnosis

For winter SAD to be diagnosed using the DSM-IV-TR, the person must experience several of the above mentioned symptoms, always including either low mood or loss of pleasure. A regular seasonal pattern is essential, as is ruling out other conditions and ensuring seasonal stressors are accounted for.

Prevalence of Winter SAD

In 1998, the British Journal of Psychiatry published “Epidemiology of recurrent major and minor depression with a seasonal pattern: The National Comorbidity Survey”, surveyed 8098 subjects in 48 states in the US, using DSM criteria. Authors DG Blazer et al reported, “The lifetime prevalence of major depression with a seasonal pattern was 0.4%, and the prevalence of major or minor depression with a seasonal pattern was 1%.” In his article Seasonal Affective Disorder in Healthy Minds, the American Psychiatric Association’s online resource, author Douglas Jacobs says it’s believed that 10-20% of people in the US are affected by some form of SAD. Jacobs also notes that SAD appears more common in women. However, men are less likely to come forward with symptoms of depression. Winter SAD is frequently reported as being more prevalent in northern latitudes, however, this is a gray area. In the book “Seasonal Affective Disorder: Practice in Research”, published by Oxford University Press, authors Tim Partonen et al point out that there are an equal number studies rejecting latitude-prevalence as there are supporting it. Check out this playlist for more information. https://detoxofsouthflorida.com addiction treatment center [button link="tel:863-623-4923" type="big" color="green" newwindow="yes"] Call Now![/button]

In recent years, a combination of improved knowledge and understanding about the condition, have led to more effective treatments helping to increase the ability of sufferers to manage their symptoms. There are a range of different treatments available for those affected by schizophrenia and a combination of medication and psychological treatments are typically used. The different forms of therapy may include the following:

Individual psychotherapy

Behavioural therapy

Psychosocial therapy

Individual Psychotherapy and Schizophrenia Treatment

Individual psychotherapy involves working with a trained therapist on a one-to-one basis, usually meeting weekly for a period of around 50 minutes each session. This is only an option once the sufferer's psychotic symptoms are under control as otherwise the patient would be unlikely to be able to cope with therapy. In place of seeing a therapist, the patient may be offered therapy with a psychiatrist, mental health nurse, psychologist or psychiatric social worker. Key to the success of any form of therapy is to have a good therapeutic relationship. The therapist may help the client to better distinguish between the disorder-related thoughts and reality as well as to gain insight and understanding about the illness and recovery.

Behavioural Therapy and Schizophrenia Treatment

This approach to therapy has gained increasing popularity in recent years and is recognised as a very practical form of therapy. The main aim of behavioural therapy is to enable the patient to both recognise and change undesirable behaviour and replace unhealthy behaviour with more health, alternative habits. Behavioural therapy uses a broad range of skills and techniques such as problem-solving, goal setting and activity scheduling to help the client to cope with different issues both directly and indirectly related to schizophrenia.

Psychosocial Therapy and Schizophrenia Treatment

Psychosocial therapy for schizophrenia treatment is all about learning new or improving existing social skills. As well as the patient, family members are also likely to benefit from this approach as it provides the opportunity to meet and gain support from others coping with the condition. This approach may involve peer support groups, multifamily groups, family support groups, treatment groups in addition to peer activity groups and psycho-education groups. As highlighted above, there are many different treatment options for schizophrenia treatment in term of psychological therapy. Although therapy is a large part of treatment, it is essential that the client's symptoms, especially in terms of psychosis, are managed properly in order for therapy to be effective. Go over this playlist from Detox of South Florida for more treatment ideas. https://detoxofsouthflorida.com best treatment addiction center [button link="tel:863-623-4923" type="big" color="green" newwindow="yes"] Call Now![/button]

Experiencing constant tension and worry can cause negativity, depression, anger, resentment as well as illnesses such as, palpitations, ulcers, a weakened immune system and even, cardiac problems. Here are five simple stress management techniques that would bring about a sense of peace, balance and harmony in everyday living.

Eating Right to Reduce Stress and Anxiety

Food plays an important role in stress management. Hunger and lack of energy makes it difficult to deal with situations and think clearly, leading to stress. Processed foods are filled with artificial chemicals, flavorings and preservatives and very little actual nutrition. Instead, reduce stress and anxiety by filling up on fruits, vegetables, fish, seeds and nuts. Smaller and frequent meals with a variety of foods would keep energy and blood-sugar levels stable and keep off performance-affecting hunger pangs. Reducing intake of sugar and salt would also have a positive affect on stress levels. Too much of sugar can cause mood swings while excess of salt leads to increase in blood pressure and, in turn, an inability to function properly and effectively. Vitamin B6 rich foods, such as, eggs, chicken and wheatgerm also help reduce stress.

Yoga and Meditation for Stress Reduction

Practicing yoga regularly helps to calm the mind and relax the body. Meditation, too, has a positive soothing effect that helps combat stress. Deep breathing exercises as well as regular meditation every day would boost creativity and create a sense of balance, increasing concentration, reducing anxiety and enhancing general well-being.

Thinking Positive to Eliminate Anxiety and Stress

When burned out and feeling low, it is easy to get trapped in the vicious cycle of negative thinking. It is possible to reduce depression and tension by encouraging positive thoughts, cutting out negativity and spending time in the company of optimistic people. The power of positive thinking is, indeed, immense making it all the more important to focus on the brighter side of things.

Vacations and Recreation to Reduce Stress

Incorporate regular vacations, recreational activities and family time as well as some quiet time to enjoy life and do things that bring happiness and peace. Getting a weekly massage, indulging in shopping or even meeting friends are good stress busters. Hobbies and sports are another great way to reduce anxiety and balance things out leading to greater emotional well-being. Regular holidays offer a break from routine and give a chance to the body and mind to recover and rejuvenate.

Regular Exercise as a Stress Reliever

The benefits of exercise are well-known and immense. Exercise releases endorphins or feel-good hormones and reduces tension. It keeps the body healthy and relaxes the mind. A fit body and mind leads to higher productivity and in turn, lesser stress. Being able to cope with challenges and overcome hurdles becomes easier when the body is able to keep up with extra demands. Stress in small amounts can actually be healthy and motivate people to perform better. It is when it becomes constant, intense and unbearable, it causes more harm than good. It is important to manage stress and not ignore it since that will only result in it becoming a chronic condition. Use the strategies given above, weaving them into your routine and life, to experience a more fulfilling and balanced way of living. This playlist from Detox of South Florida will give you more information about living healthier and better. https://detoxofsouthflorida.com is a trusted addiction treatment center [button link="tel:863-623-4923" type="big" color="red" newwindow="yes"] Call Now![/button]

Knowing about the course of depression symptoms can help guide those seeking treatment for depression.

Statistics About How Long Clinical Depression Symptoms Last

There is good news and bad news, but more than 50% of people with depression do recover. It is definitely worth it to seek treatment for depression early because statistics show that the longer depression goes untreated, the harder it is to treat. Clinical studies of people seeking treatment for depression reveal that about one-half of people who have a Major Depressive Episode (i.e. clinically diagnosed major depression) suffer from the symptoms for 2 to 20 weeks. The other half of people who have a Major Depressive Episode suffer for 20 weeks or more. Statistics show that 20% of patients with a major clinical depression will continue to be ill for at least 2 years. And 12% of patients with major clinical depression will continue to be ill even after 5 years. When clinical depression lasts 2 years or longer it is considered to be chronic depression. About half of patients with chronic major clinical depression who get better with treatment end up suffering relapses within one or two years after stopping treatment. This is another indicator that treatment works, it just may have to be ongoing.

Facts About Another Type of (Milder) Chronic Depression

Another type of chronic depression is known as Dysthymic Disorder, or Dysthymia. This depression lasts longer than two years, however, the symptoms are not severe enough to meet the criteria for a Major Depressive Episode. About 6% of the general population suffers from Dysthymia, but more than 75% of people who have it will have an episode of major clinical depression at some point. When this occurs, it is known as “double depression.”

Episodic Depression and Winter Depression

Those who recover from a Major Depressive Episode in less than two years are said to have episodic depression, (as opposed to chronic depression.) But for some, symptoms will recur one or more times. Seasonal Affective Disorder is a major clinical depression but it has its onset in the fall and, if left untreated, usually goes away in spring. This type of depression only affects people living at certain latitudes where the days get shorter in winter. Visit a treatment center in your area for more information. https://detoxofsouthflorida.com best addiction treatment center in Florida Miami

Statistics About Treating Clinical Depression

Different types of treatments for the different types of depressions exist and statistics consistently show that they help around 50% or more of patients get relief from depression. For example, light therapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) help with winter depression in about 50% of cases. A recent study by Dr. Kelly Rohan showed that CBT helped prevent the recurrence of winter depression the following fall. This result, if it is replicated by other researchers, may provide clues to how to prevent episodic depression from recurring. CBT is also effective in treating other forms of depression. Light therapy is also being used effectively for non-seasonal depression, as is sleep/wake therapy. Antidepressant medications can also help in about 50% of cases. There are specialized treatments for chronic depression. Some people with depression symptoms suffer for a short time and treatment helps them return to normal, though symptoms may recur from time to time. For example, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy skills specifically adapted for treating certain mental health conditions such as bulimia, depression and anxiety disorder are found in a number of self-help workbooks or guides.

Simple yet effective examples of strategies used to manage stress include:

Regular exercise to reduce stress

Remembering the serenity prayer to reduce stress

Avoiding caffeine to reduce stress

Avoiding perfectionism to reduce stress

Regular Exercise to Reduce Stress

One of the most effective means of reducing stress levels is through exercise as this increases levels of endorphins which make one feel better. Exercise for the depressed individual may begin by just walking to the shops to buy a paper and gradually increase over time to perhaps going for a swim or getting involved in a team sport. Another important benefit of engaging in regular exercise is it provides a wonderful distraction from anxiety in addition to getting one out the house and having increased social contact with others.

Remembering The Serenity Prayer To Reduce Stress

The serenity prayer has long been regarded as an effective means of coping with stress and is regularly used within addiction treatment centre and 12-Step fellowships such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous and Gamblers Anonymous: 'God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.' This prayer helps the individual learn to let go of issues and worries that cannot be dealt with and to focus the mind on identifying which problems need to be tackled.

Avoiding Caffeine To Reduce Stress

As caffeine is a stimulant it is a good idea, particularly when one is suffering sleep problems as a result of anxiety or depression, to reduce intake of coffee and tea especially in the evening. Also, many other popular carbonated drinks contain vast amounts of caffeine so opting for the caffeine-free brands may help. Perhaps think about trying an alternative drink in the evening such as chamomile tea, warm milk or horlicks for example.

Avoiding Perfectionism To Reduce Stress

As perfection is something that can never be achieved the perfectionist will always end up feeling as if they are never good enough or have failed in some way or another. Relenting, unrealistic, high expectations of others and oneself will likely result in both anxiety and depression as a result of increased stress and frustration. Remember that perfection will always remain out of reach as it is merely an illusion - setting more achievable goals and meeting them is a far greater use of one's time and energy. There are many different approaches to stress management and using the above suggestions may help one begin to make important changes which will in turn likely help one better cope with mental health conditions associated with excessive stress such as anxiety and depression. Check out this playlist from Detox of South Florida for more tips and ways to live a healthier life. https://detoxofsouthflorida.com best addiction treatment center [button link="tel:863-623-4923" type="big" color="blue" newwindow="yes"] Call Now![/button]

While the disorder is believed to affect around ten million Americans, it is virtually unheard of in locations close to the equator, since the condition is associated with a lack of exposure to natural light. In addition to the traditional methods of SAD treatment — including light therapy, medication, cognitive behavioural therapy and regular exercise — there are a variety of other self-help tools and practical suggestions to help cope with the condition including:

Nutritious, balanced diet;

Lighten up one's home and work environment; and

Think about taking a winter-sun holiday.

Nutrition and Seasonal Affective Disorder

Since SAD is associated with changes in appetite, binge eating, craving for simple carbohydrates such as sugary, snack foods, diet is an important part of managing symptoms. If possible, find a recipe or guide book on meals that are high in protein, high in omega-3 and low in simple carbohydrates. Alternatives to snacking on sugary foods can include eating seeds (from health food stores), magnesium-rich nuts and raw vegetables. Eating more complex carbohydrates, high-protein and omega-3-rich foods will also help to reduce cravings for simple carbohydrates, while balancing blood sugar levels. Taking a daily multivitamin is also beneficial, particularly for those who lead a busy life and therefore fail to eat a balanced diet.

Lightening Up One's Environment and Seasonal Affective Disorder

In addition to traditional light therapy using a light box, it is a good idea to try to make one's home and/or work environment as bright as possible. At work, it can be beneficial to relocate to a desk that's situated near a window, for instance. At home, think about redecorating using bright light. It can be helpful to replace ordinary light bulbs with daylight bulbs that provide full-spectrum daylight. Keep blinds or curtains open as long as possible and regularly prune any hedges or trees that may block sunlight access.

Winter Sun Holiday and Seasonal Affective Disorder

While the overwhelming majority of Brits jet off to warmer climates during the summer months, this is not necessarily the best time to take a holiday for those who suffer from SAD. As sunlight is readily available at home during the summer months, it can be worthwhile to consider a trip during the autumn or late winter – times when sunlight is limited. In January, flights tend to be cheapest and SAD symptoms are often at their worst. Therefore, traveling to locations in the equatorial region can be a good option, as the abundance of sunlight can improve health. Some symptoms may not be helped by self-help strategies, and as with any illness, it is important to make an appointment to discuss effective treatment options with a physician. Check out this playlist from the best addiction treatment center in Florida for more useful information. https://detoxofsouthflorida.com addiction treatment center [button link="tel:863-623-4923" type="big" color="green" newwindow="yes"] Call Now![/button]

In youth the brain is taught how and what to think later in life.

Training the Brain

The brain is conditioned through the regularity of thought. The more often a thought is...thought...the more often it will pop into a person's head unannounced. Like a hiker in the woods, the mind tends to travel down certain pathways. As a trail is followed more often, the traversed path grows deeper and wider; at the same time, the unexplored routes grow over and become less obvious. Eventually the known path, the chosen thought, becomes the only obvious option. This is what gives one the ability, over time, to play beautifully complicated music without conscious effort. It is also why people grow fond of each other, even seeming enemies, as they are humanized over the years. Even if something is uncomfortable, like a thorn in a finger, if it serves any extensive mental purpose it will become familiar. The brain's greatest asset and limitation, adaptability, will cause anybody to think about (to miss) any thorn that has been in place for a year. The physiological consequences of a thought are identical, regardless of whether it is good or bad - familiarization is facilitated no matter what. Such is the habit of thought. While a simple network may be capable of retrogressing, the mind is not capable of forgetting a thought. Every intellection and every emotion is forever recorded by chemicals in the brain. A person's identity is the culmination of every thought they have every had.

The Flow of Thought

The excitement of neural pathways naturally leads to indirect neural excitement. As the brain is trained how to think, associations are cemented. Given enough time, wiring within the brain makes choice obsolete. With age, words like 'cancer' may unintentionally pop into the mind when the word 'fear' is thought, or 'love' when 'good' is thought. This is true of all words. The words of a thought exist emotionally. Some words, such as shield or pillow, may have neutral-positive associations. Two seemingly unrelated thoughts on the same emotional level are just as likely to be thought or spoken at a given time - the choice between them is determined by the context of the moment. The magnitude of thoughts are determined by the current emotional level of the individual. When happy, a person may stub their toe and think how lucky they are that it wasn't a harder impact; when unhappy, that same person may think how unlucky they are to have not avoided it altogether (they may even blame God). Just as a person's current thought is influenced by their emotional level, so too is the flow of abstraction. The mind must go through stages to get from a state of happiness to one of depression, and by being in a genuinely happy state the mind is automatically not in a depressed one. As seemingly obvious as this sounds, many voluntarily put themselves in a state of fear by watching horror movies or positions of lack by watching tragedies. These same people are the ones who go to bed on that night fearing the dark or crying themselves to sleep.

Thinking Positively Changes Lives

By thinking a happy thought now, even when the tendency may be to grumble or complain, people can paint brighter futures for themselves. Not only will their thoughts be happier, their actions and outlook (being affected by what they think) will open their life to new and invigorating experiences which they deem happy. Check out this playlist from Detox of South Florida to change your life for the better. https://detoxofsouthflorida.com Best treatment center in Florida [button link="tel:863-623-4923" type="big" color="blue" newwindow="yes"] Call Now![/button]

It shouldn’t be surprising to us that humans, like other animals, are susceptible to changes in weather and light conditions. Just as cooler temperatures and shorter days signal geese to prepare for migration, squirrels to stock their nests with food, and bears to hunker down for a long hibernation, some people experience physiological symptoms related to seasonal changes, as well. So, if you feel gloomy just thinking about the changes that fall brings and the approach of winter, it may not be your attitude that’s at fault. According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, symptoms of SAD may include weight gain, change in sleep patterns, depression, and a craving for starchy or sweet foods. Symptoms can be mild to severe. Mild symptoms, often called "winter blues", may cause lethargy, listlessness, or a feeling of unexplainable sadness. Severe symptoms may lead to depression and thoughts of suicide.

Tips to Help You Cope

Even if you may feel like hibernating with the bears, there are better ways of handling SAD symptoms. Here are some tips that can help you cope:

If you’re having thoughts about suicide, get help. See your family doctor, or call the Canadian Mental Health Association for resources in your area.

Starting the day right with a nutrient rich breakfast can help you feel better and prevent weight gain. If you’re not big on breakfast, try to have a piece of fresh fruit or whiz together a fruit/protein drink in the blender. Good nutrition is necessary for optimal health at any time, and especially now.

Get outside! Getting as much sunlight as possible can help alleviate the symptoms of SAD. Grab your camera and go for a walk, start a fall seed collection, or gather some leaves for pressing.

Exercise. Now is a great time to begin an outdoor exercise program. Instead of grabbing a doughnut on your break, get outdoors and move. You’ll feel better for it and starting now will be a lot easier than starting in January. Plan to try some new outdoor activities over the winter months. Check your local recreation centre or community learning guide for some ideas.

Consider light therapy. Installing full-spectrum light bulbs in places where you spend much of your time indoors can also help. Talk with your doctor about this.
